Global Symposium for Regulators 2012

On 2-4 October, President of the Office of Electronic Communications Magdalena Gaj participated in the Global Symposium for Regulators organised in Colombo, Sri Lanka, under the auspices of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

 

The Global Symposium for Regulators 2012 (GSR12) annually brings together heads of national telecoms regulators and representatives of the telecommunications industry from around the world. It is a platform for the exchange of views and experiences to promote an open dialogue between regulators and key stakeholders in the ICT sector.

Every year, the symposium is attended by hundreds of participants from around the world, representatives of international organisations, regulators, telecommunications companies and the media.

This year's edition was devoted to regulatory issues in the era of digital convergence.

President Magdalena Gaj took part in the panel opening GSR12 with the Secretary General of the ITU Hamadoun I. Touré, and Lalith Weeratunga (Chairman of the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka), Zohra Derdouri (President of the Office of Post and Telecommunications in Algeria), Eugene Kaspersky (CEO of Kaspersky Lab), Robert Pepper (Vice President of CISCO). The opening discussion concerned the regulatory approach in times of global crisis, co-regulation, creating demand, and global action in this area.

President Gaj also took part in a debate on broadband infrastructure development, in which she shared Polish experiences with the participants of GSR12 related to the infrastructure stock-taking exercise. She also pointed to the importance of next generation infrastructure in the stimulation of economic growth and further development of the ICT sector.

During GSR12 other important issues of the ICT sector were also raised, including discussion about net neutrality, frequency resources management, international roaming services in cloud computing and security in cyberspace.

At the end of the conference, President of UKE Magdalena Gaj, together with Secretary General of the ITU, Hamadoun I. Touré and Brahim Sanou, Director of the ITU Telecommunication Development Bureau, summed up this year's edition of the Global Symposium for Regulators, and invited everyone to Poland for the next year's edition of the GSR, which will be held on 2-5 July 2013 in Warsaw.
